Stereotypes
Even though tattooing is becoming more and more commonplace in western society, there is still a stigma attached to it, especially when it comes to women with tattoos. Even in the tattoo community, where women make up over half of it, there is still a stigma. There are many negative stereotypes that come along with women who have tattoos that reflect an inequality in our society.
One of the most common stereotypes that women with tattoos face is that they are promiscuous. People perceive women with tattoos as someone who is “easy” or someone who sleeps around a lot. The reason that this is even is a stereotype is because of the way that society treats women. The female body is highly sexualized in society so by default tattoos on women are also sexualized.
Another common stereotype is that women with tattoos are unattractive. This stereotype is particularly ridiculous because of the stereotype I mentioned earlier about women with tattoos are sexualized. Men expect women to look a certain way. A tattoo does not fit the ridiculous criteria that men place upon the looks of women.
If a women does have a tattoo its is suppose to be easily hidden and look “feminine” such as a dolphin or a butterfly. Women with darker tattoos such as a black and grey piece are considered to look manlier. If a women has what is considered to be a “manly” tattoo they are considered unattractive especially if the tattoo is in plain sight most of the time.
